There are things you can do if you feel that your marriage is going downhill in order to save it, even though your partner is doubtful that there is anything wrong or is not interested. Filing for divorce should not be taken lightly and if you think that you might be on that road, then start today to improve your marriage and your life together.
In order to maintain a healthy and happy relationship, all marriages require the same things even though the marriages are different. Couples need a willingness to make time for each other, the ability to forgive, acceptance, openness and honesty in their communication and of course, love. Without good communication in a marriage, it is missing one of the key elements to a healthy marriage. Keeping emotions inside rather then being open and honest with your partner can lead to resentment. How will your partner know if there are any problems if communication does not happen, it then becomes impossible for the partner. Never hesitate to tell your partner about something that you do not like in the relationship, making sure you tell them in a respectful and non-confrontational manor.
A marriage can not live without the element of forgiveness. Holding on to past hurts or betrayals will slowly eat away at you and your love for your spouse. Forgiveness towards someone does not mean that you forget or that you condone the hurtful behavior, it just means that you are willing to understand that it was a mistake and you are accepting that they are sorry for what happened. Don't let your desire for revenge or stubbornness get in the way of a happy marriage.
By showing a willingness to make time for your spouse, you are showing them that you care for them. Give each other the chance to leave the responsibilities of life behind by doing things together and it will affirm the bond that you share.
The two biggest thing a marriage must have is acceptance and love. You must always show acceptance for your spouse for who they truly are inside. It's no big deal if dishes are in the sink, maybe they are just messy. You can deal with them pushing a mop around your feet, maybe they are just a neat freak. Your spouse is not going to change after the wedding day, you married your spouse for a reason. You show the love for your spouse by the acceptance of them. You love them by accepting them for who they are on the inside and that is true love. Through years of marriage it can be hard to remember how a person should be treated because we get so used to treating people a certain way. Even if your spouse didn't give you the support in the way you need, wouldn't you give them all of the support they need if you truly love them? Just because your spouse does not give you the courtesy of talking respectfully to you, talk respectfully to them because that is what you do when you are truly in love. Stop looking for your spouse to treat you the way that you think that you deserve to be treated. Love is about doing what is best for the person you love. Eventually your spouse will follow your example and, in the best way they know how, will show their love for you.
